Each Sunday, the Sweet Potato Pie Project highlights an individual, organization, movement, website, or blog that is moving toward global awareness, social change, and community service.
This week's Sunday's Best is 46664.
46664 is Nelson Mandela's Global HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention Campaign. It promotes awareness and education through entertainment. This campaign, named after Mandela's prison number (466) and the year of his imprisonment (1964), seeks to bring awareness to the AIDS pandemic and the factors that seem to influence it, poverty, lack of education, substandard health care, and gender inequality.
At the end of 2007, it is believed that over 5 million people are living with AIDS in Asia.
In South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, 15-20% of the adult population is infected with AIDS.
And here in America, AIDS cases in the Black and Latino communities are reaching astronomical numbers.
Though African Americans made up 12% of the U.S. population in 2007, they (we) were 49% of the new AIDS diagnoses in 2007.
These statistics are staggering and I encourage you to get involved. The most important thing you can do is get tested.
